Mary Elle Fanning was born on April 9, 1998, in Conyers, Georgia, United States. Her mother, Heather Joy Arrington, and her father, Steven Fanning, raised her alongside her older sister, Dakota Fanning (born 1994), who is also a well-known actress. Elle Fanning began elementary school in 2007 and later attended Campbell Hall School in Los Angeles, from which she graduated in June 2016.
Elle Fanning made her first cinematic appearance in 2001 in I Am Sam, where she acted alongside Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer, portraying the two-year-old version of her sister Dakota Fanning’s character. This early role marked the beginning of her career as a child actress.
In 2004, she appeared in The Door in the Floor with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. Two years later, in 2006, she played the daughter of characters portrayed by Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in Babel. She continued working with Cate Blanchett in 2008, when she portrayed the six-year-old version of Daisy in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, directed by David Fincher.
In 2011, she starred in the American science fiction thriller Super 8, written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Her transition from child roles to more mature characters was marked by performances in films such as Somewhere, Ginger & Rosa, and The Neon Demon.
In 2019, Elle Fanning served as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming one of the youngest jurors in the festival’s history.
In 2020, she gained widespread critical acclaim for her role as Empress Catherine the Great in the television series The Great, starring opposite Nicholas Hoult, who portrayed Russian Emperor Peter III. The series established her as a leading actress in prestige television.
