Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra is a Peruvian lawyer and politician who served as President of Peru from December 7, 2022, until October 10, 2025. She made history as the first woman to hold the presidency of the country, assuming office during a period of deep political crisis and institutional instability.

Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra was born on May 31, 1962, in the city of Chalhuanca, located in the Apurímac region in southern Peru. She completed her legal education at University of San Martín de Porres, graduating as a lawyer and later building a career largely within the public sector.

Between 2007 and 2022, Boluarte worked at the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC), serving as a legal advisor and office administrator. During this fifteen-year period, she held responsibilities related to civil registration, including birth, marriage, and death records, gaining extensive expertise in public law and administrative governance.

Boluarte entered politics through the Free Peru Party (Peru Libre). She ran unsuccessfully for mayor of the Surquillo district in Lima in 2018 and later for a seat in Congress in the 2020 parliamentary elections. Her political breakthrough came in the 2021 general elections, when she was elected as Vice President on the ticket of Pedro Castillo. Following Castillo’s victory, she assumed the roles of Vice President of Peru and Minister of Development and Social Inclusion.

On December 7, 2022, after President Pedro Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress and was subsequently removed from office, constitutional procedures were enacted. Boluarte was sworn in as President of Peru by Congress on the same day. In her inaugural address, she called for national unity and declared the fight against corruption as a central priority of her administration.

Throughout her presidency, Boluarte faced widespread protests, political polarization, and rising crime rates across the country. Her government survived eight separate impeachment attempts during her tenure. Despite these efforts, increasing concerns over public security and governance ultimately led to her removal. On October 10, 2025, the Peruvian Congress voted to dismiss her from office, citing her inability to manage escalating security challenges.

Following her removal, the President of Congress, José Jerí, was appointed as interim President of Peru. Boluarte thus became both the first female president in Peruvian history and one of the shortest-serving heads of state in the country’s modern democratic era.

In her personal life, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra married David Gómez Villasante in 1992; the marriage ended in divorce in 2010. She is the mother of two children.
