Claudia Sheinbaum has served as the President of Mexico since October 1, 2024, becoming the first woman in the country’s history to hold the office. Born on June 24, 1962, in Mexico City, her full name is Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She was raised in an academically oriented family; her mother, Annie Pardo Cemo, is a biologist and retired professor, while her father, Carlos Sheinbaum, is a chemical engineer. She has one older sister.



Claudia Sheinbaum completed her undergraduate education at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Between 1993 and 1996, she pursued graduate studies at the same institution, earning a master’s degree in physics and a doctorate in energy engineering. Her doctoral research was conducted at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, United States. In 1995, she joined the university’s Institute of Engineering and, in 1999, received the award for Best Young Researcher.

In 2007, Claudia Sheinbaum became a member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, where she worked on climate change mitigation. She was part of the team that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for its contributions to climate science and global awareness.

Politically active since the 1980s and 1990s as both a student and an academic, Claudia Sheinbaum helped establish a student-led Revolutionary Democratic Party in 1998. Despite this early activism, she did not hold public office until the early 2000s. In 2000, she was appointed Secretary of the Environment of Mexico City by the mayor at the time, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Beginning her formal political career in 2000, Claudia Sheinbaum served as Secretary of the Environment until 2006. She was later elected Mayor of the Tlalpan borough, serving from 2015 to 2017. On July 1, 2018, she was elected Head of Government of Mexico City as part of the Juntos Haremos Historia coalition and held the position from 2018 to 2023. During this period, she became both the first woman and the first Jewish leader to govern the capital.

Throughout her political career, Claudia Sheinbaum has focused strongly on women’s rights, environmental protection, and social equality. As Head of Government of Mexico City, she launched major initiatives to improve public transportation and reduce air pollution, while also playing an active role in anti-corruption policies and efforts to reduce social inequality.

In the general elections held on June 2, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum ran as the candidate of the National Regeneration Movement and won decisively, securing approximately 60% of the vote. With this victory, she became Mexico’s first female president and officially assumed office on October 1, 2024.
