António Guterres is a Portuguese politician who has served as the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations, becoming one of the most influential diplomatic figures of the 21st century.

António Guterres was born on April 30, 1949, in Lisbon, Portugal. His full name is António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres. Born under the zodiac sign Taurus, he is currently 76 years old. He studied physics and electrical engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico and Camões Secondary School, graduating in 1971.

In 1974, António Guterres joined the Social Democratic Socialist Party. Following the Carnation Revolution, he took an active role within the party and soon became one of its prominent figures.

In 1992, António Guterres was elected Secretary-General of the Socialist Party. After the party won the national elections in 1995, he became Prime Minister of Portugal. He served two consecutive terms as prime minister, holding office from October 28, 1995, until April 6, 2002.

António Guterres resigned in 2002, citing economic difficulties in the country and the Socialist Party’s failure in local elections. Following the party’s defeat to the right-wing Social Democratic Party in the 2002 general elections, he brought his domestic political career in Portugal to an end.

In 1992, António Guterres was elected President of the Socialist International, a position he held until 2005. Afterward, he was elected by the United Nations General Assembly as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, serving in that role from June 15, 2005, to December 31, 2015.

On October 5, 2016, the United Nations Security Council unanimously recommended António Guterres for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. On October 13, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly officially elected him to the post.

Following the end of the term of the 8th Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on December 31, 2016, António Guterres assumed office as the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 2017.

António Guterres is fluent in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish.

Marriages and Family

António Guterres married his first wife, Luísa Amélia Guimarães e Melo, in 1972. She passed away in 1998. They have two children, Pedro Guimarães e Melo Guterres and Mariana Guimarães e Melo de Oliveira Guterres. In 2001, he married his second wife, Catarina de Almeida Vaz Pinto.
