Story Overview

Thumbsucker explores the uneasy and often painful process of growing up, revealing that maturity does not come easily at any age. Justin Cobb, portrayed by Lou Pucci, is a seventeen-year-old teenager who still sucks his thumb, a habit that negatively affects his family life, personal relationships, and sense of identity. Aware that this behavior holds him back, Justin becomes determined to change and break free from what others see as a childish weakness.

His life takes an unexpected turn when an unconventional orthodontist guru introduces him to hypnosis therapy, which seemingly succeeds in curing his thumb-sucking habit. However, just as Justin believes he is finally becoming “normal,” deeper problems begin to surface. The habit turns out to be only a symptom of a far more profound emotional struggle rooted in fear and insecurity. Beneath it lies Justin’s anxiety about not being good enough for his mother and a haunting fear that she may eventually abandon him. As these hidden emotions emerge, Justin is forced to confront the true challenges of adolescence, identity, and emotional vulnerability.
