The Motorcycle Diaries (2005)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

The Motorcycle Diaries follows the transformative journey of two young Argentinian men across Latin America in 1952. At the heart of the story is Ernesto Guevara (Gael García Bernal), a 23-year-old medical student specializing in leprosy, and his older friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna), a 29-year-old biochemist. United by curiosity and a thirst for adventure, they set out on a life-changing expedition that will challenge their perceptions of the world.

Leaving behind the comforts of Buenos Aires, the pair embark on their journey aboard a worn 1939 Norton 500 motorcycle. What begins as a romantic road trip gradually evolves into a profound exploration of social inequality and human resilience. As they traverse vast landscapes—from the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu to the dense jungles of the Amazon basin in Peru—they encounter diverse communities living under starkly different conditions.

Each encounter reshapes their understanding of the continent’s cultural richness and systemic struggles. Witnessing poverty, injustice, and marginalization firsthand, particularly in a remote leper colony, forces them to question the meaning of progress and the human cost behind it. These experiences leave an indelible mark on Ernesto Guevara, planting the ideological seeds that will later define his revolutionary identity as “El Che.”

Based on the real-life travel journals of both men, The Motorcycle Diaries is not just a road movie but a deeply introspective narrative about identity, awakening, and the birth of a political consciousness. It captures the emotional and philosophical evolution of a young man destined to become one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century.
