Story Overview

The Kite Runner tells the emotional story of Amir, an Afghan immigrant who has spent many years living in California. When he learns that the son of his childhood friend Hassan is in grave danger, he is compelled to return to his homeland, now under Taliban rule, to confront his past and seek redemption.

Amir, now settled in America, is the son of a wealthy merchant family from Kabul who fled the country after the rise of the Taliban. During his childhood in Kabul, he shared a deep bond with Hassan, the son of his family’s servant. However, during a pivotal kite-fighting tournament, Amir witnesses a traumatic event involving Hassan and chooses to turn away, betraying his closest friend. This moment of cowardice haunts him for years.

Many years later, upon learning that Hassan and his wife have been killed by the Taliban, Amir decides to return to Afghanistan to rescue Hassan’s orphaned son. His journey becomes not only a dangerous mission through a war-torn country but also a deeply personal quest for forgiveness and redemption, forcing him to face the consequences of his past actions.
