Story Overview

Roman de gare tells the mysterious story of a celebrated novelist searching for inspiration in the most unexpected corners of everyday life. While wandering through unusual places and observing strangers, the writer begins to construct the characters of his next novel—people whose lives are filled with secrets, coincidences, and hidden connections.

Meanwhile, a seemingly ordinary woman named Judith Ralitzer (Fanny Ardant) suddenly disappears under suspicious circumstances, drawing the attention of a determined police inspector (Dominique Pinon). At the same time, a drifter with a mysterious past (Dominique Pinon) crosses paths with Huguette (Audrey Dana), a lonely woman working at a roadside diner. Their unexpected encounter sets off a chain of events that blurs the line between fiction and reality.

Directed by Claude Lelouch, the film unfolds like a puzzle in which identities overlap and coincidences carry deeper meaning. As the narrative threads gradually intertwine, the audience is invited to question who is telling the story and whether the characters are merely part of a novel—or living inside a carefully crafted illusion.
