Story Overview

Pi is a tense and intellectually charged psychological thriller that follows Max Cohen (Sean Gullette), a brilliant but deeply isolated mathematician living in New York. Tormented by relentless headaches and increasingly consumed by his search for a numerical pattern that could explain the structure of existence itself, Max devotes his life to a powerful home-built computer capable of processing seemingly impossible calculations.

As his obsession intensifies, Max finds himself pursued by two opposing forces: a mysterious group of Kabbalah-driven seekers convinced that his discoveries may reveal sacred truths, and a ruthless Wall Street firm eager to exploit his work for financial gain. What begins as a quest for ultimate order gradually turns into a descent into paranoia, fear, and mental disintegration.

Directed and written by Darren Aronofsky, Pi transforms abstract mathematics into a dark cinematic experience, blending philosophical anxiety, urban alienation, and spiritual obsession into a stark black-and-white nightmare. The film stands out as a daring debut, driven by claustrophobic visuals, a hypnotic rhythm, and a haunting performance from Sean Gullette.
