Story Overview

Michou d'Auber follows the emotional journey of a young boy caught between identity, culture, and belonging during a politically turbulent time. Set against the backdrop of the Algerian War, the story centers on Mesut (Samy Seghir), a nine-year-old boy of Algerian origin who is sent from Kabil to rural France. There, he is placed with a childless couple, Georges and Gisèle Duvailly (Gérard Depardieu and Nathalie Baye), whose marriage is already strained.

Fearing the rising tensions and prejudice fueled by the ongoing conflict between France and Algeria, Gisèle makes a drastic decision to protect the boy. She renames Mesut as “Michou,” conceals his Muslim identity by converting him to Catholicism, and even alters his physical appearance to help him blend into the village. Through this transformation, the film explores themes of assimilation, identity suppression, and survival in a society marked by fear and division.

As time passes, an unexpected bond forms between Georges and Michou, bringing warmth and a sense of family into their lives. The boy begins to adapt, experiencing what seems like a normal childhood with a new school and a sense of belonging. However, the truth of his identity looms in the background, threatening to unravel everything.

Meanwhile, as the conflict in Algeria intensifies, xenophobia and racism begin to surface within the village community. Georges finds himself increasingly at odds with those around him, while also confronting his own emotions and his complicated relationship with Gisèle. Ultimately, Michou d'Auber presents a poignant and human story about acceptance, prejudice, and the fragile nature of identity in times of conflict.
