Story Overview

The dysfunctional Hoover family embarks on an unforgettable road trip filled with chaos, humor, and heartfelt moments. At the center of the story is Richard (Greg Kinnear), a struggling motivational speaker desperately trying to sell his self-help program. His wife Sheryl (Toni Colette) holds the fragile family together while also caring for her brother Frank (Steve Carell), a brilliant but deeply depressed academic recovering from a personal crisis.

Their young daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) dreams of becoming a beauty queen and earns a spot in the “Little Miss Sunshine” pageant. Determined to support her, the entire family piles into a broken-down yellow van for a cross-country journey to California. Along for the ride is Olive’s teenage brother Dwayne, a devoted follower of Friedrich Nietzsche who has taken a vow of silence, and their foul-mouthed, rebellious grandfather.

As tensions rise and secrets surface, the family’s journey becomes a touching exploration of failure, ambition, and unconditional love. Through absurd mishaps and emotional revelations, the Hoovers discover that success may not mean winning—but staying together no matter what.
