Official Trailer

Plot Summary

After serving as a soldier in the Iraq War, Mike Deerfield mysteriously disappears shortly after returning home. His father Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones), a former military policeman, and his mother Joan begin a desperate search to uncover what happened to their son. As their investigation unfolds, local police detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) becomes reluctantly involved, offering limited assistance at first.

As evidence begins to surface, it becomes increasingly clear that Mike may have fallen victim to a violent crime. Hank and Emily struggle to keep control of the investigation while facing resistance from high-ranking military officials who seem determined to obstruct the truth. Each new discovery raises troubling questions about the circumstances surrounding Mike’s final days.

When details about Mike’s time in Iraq start to emerge, Hank’s carefully structured worldview begins to collapse. Forced to confront uncomfortable realities about war, authority, and patriotism, he must re-evaluate the beliefs he has long held sacred in order to uncover the truth behind his son’s disappearance.

Inspired by real events, In the Valley of Elah is a haunting and emotionally charged drama that explores the psychological scars of war and their impact far beyond the battlefield. Written and directed by Paul Haggis, the film marked his first project following the Academy Award–winning success of Crash, delivering a powerful meditation on loss, accountability, and moral reckoning.
