Story Overview

Broken English follows Nora Wilder (Parker Posey), a single woman living in New York who finds herself increasingly disillusioned with modern relationships. Despite working at a prestigious boutique hotel, Nora struggles with loneliness and a growing skepticism toward love. Watching her best friend Audrey (Drea de Matteo) enjoy what appears to be a perfect marriage only deepens her sense of inadequacy and confusion about what she truly wants.

Constant reminders from her mother about her single status and a series of disastrous dates push Nora into a state of emotional uncertainty. Just as she begins to lose hope, she meets Julien (Melvil Poupaud), a charming and carefree Frenchman whose spontaneous outlook on life challenges everything she believes about relationships.

Determined not to repeat her past mistakes, Nora embarks on a personal journey that takes her to Paris. There, she attempts to break free from her old habits and emotional barriers. As she navigates this new chapter, Nora realizes that before she can truly find love, she must first confront her insecurities and rediscover herself. The film offers a subtle and honest portrayal of modern romance, self-doubt, and emotional growth.
