Aloft (2015)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
Aloft tells a quiet yet emotionally layered story about Nana, a self-reliant and internationally known artist whose life is shaped by choices made decades earlier. Living in emotional isolation, Nana has built a reputation and identity through her art, but her success has come at the cost of severed family ties and unresolved guilt.
Twenty years after being forced to separate from her young son, Nana’s carefully constructed world is disrupted when their paths unexpectedly cross again. Her son, now an adult, carries the emotional scars of abandonment and a deep need for answers. As their lives intersect, both are compelled to confront buried memories, unspoken resentments, and the lingering consequences of past decisions.
Directed by Claudia Llosa, the film unfolds with a restrained narrative style, focusing on silence, distance, and emotional tension rather than overt drama. Through its contemplative pacing and intimate performances by Jennifer Connelly and Cillian Murphy, Aloft explores themes of motherhood, forgiveness, and the fragile possibility of reconciliation, ultimately questioning whether emotional healing is possible after years of separation.
