A History of Violence (2005)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

A History of Violence is a tense and unsettling psychological thriller that examines the thin line between identity, morality, and buried violence beneath the surface of an apparently perfect life.

Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) lives what seems to be an ideal American existence: a quiet life in a small town, a loving wife, two children, and a modest diner that he runs with honesty and dedication. Respected by his community and devoted to his family, Tom embodies the image of an ordinary, upright citizen.

This fragile normality shatters when two violent drifters arrive in town and attempt to rob Tom’s diner. Acting instinctively, Tom kills both men while protecting his customers and friends. The incident turns him into a local hero overnight, and the media quickly elevates him as a symbol of moral courage and American virtue. Reluctantly, Tom finds himself under the harsh glare of television cameras and public admiration.

Uncomfortable with his sudden fame, Tom tries to return to his quiet routine, but the past refuses to stay buried. The arrival of two mysterious and menacing strangers disrupts the peace of the Stall family. These men claim that Tom is not who he appears to be—that he is someone from their violent past, someone who wronged them long ago.

As suspicion grows and danger closes in, long-suppressed truths begin to surface. Is Tom truly the simple family man he claims to be, or is his past soaked in blood and brutality? A History of Violence methodically peels back layers of identity to reveal how violence, once unleashed, can never be fully escaped.
