Mike Pence (born Michael Richard Pence) has served as Vice President of the United States since January 20, 2017, under President Donald Trump. He assumed office following the end of Barack Obama’s presidency and formally received the position from former Vice President Joe Biden.
Mike Pence was born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana, to Nancy Jane and Edward J. Pence, Jr. He was educated at Columbus North High School before attending Hanover College, where he studied from 1977 to 1981. He later graduated from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law and completed his postgraduate studies at Indiana University.
After graduating from law school in 1986, Mike Pence worked as an independent attorney. His early political ambitions led him to run for Congress in 1988 and 1990, though both attempts were unsuccessful. Following these defeats, he shifted his focus toward media, hosting conservative radio and television programs in Rushville, Indiana, between 1994 and 1999.
Mike Pence has stated that he was inspired to enter politics by figures such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.. His political breakthrough came in 2000, when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented the state of Indiana for six consecutive terms and served as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
From January 14, 2013, to January 20, 2017, Mike Pence served as Governor of Indiana. His tenure was marked by strong conservative positions on social and economic issues, reflecting the traditional values of the Republican Party.
Mike Pence is known for his firm stance against liberal policies on immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, and abortion. He has publicly rejected the scientific consensus on climate change, claiming that “global warming” is a narrative promoted by environmental organizations. In foreign policy, he supports a traditional Republican approach centered on sustained military presence in the Middle East.
He is also a vocal opponent of automatic citizenship for individuals born on U.S. soil, arguing that citizenship should instead be conditional upon permanent residence, employment, tax obligations, and mandatory military service.
Mike Pence married educator Karen Batten in 1985. The couple has three children: Audrey Pence, Charlotte Pence, and Michael Pence.
