Regarded as one of the most recognizable and influential classical pianists of his generation, he achieved worldwide fame at a remarkably young age through extraordinary talent and discipline.

Lang Lang began piano training at the age of three and gave his first public recital at five. At the age of nine, he was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, marking the beginning of his formal academic music education. In 1995, he performed the complete set of Frédéric Chopin’s 24 Études at the Beijing Concert Hall. The same year, he won first prize at the Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians in Japan and performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra on Japan’s NHK television.

In 1997, at the age of fifteen, Lang Lang moved to the United States with his father. He enrolled at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he studied under renowned pedagogue Gary Graffman.

A major turning point in his international career came in 1999. At the Ravinia Festival’s “Gala of the Century,” Lang Lang stepped in at the last minute to replace André Watts and performed Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The performance received overwhelming acclaim and brought him to the attention of the global classical music community.

In 2004, Lang Lang was appointed as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. He has also served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2004, and on October 28, 2013, he was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Lang Lang performed at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, an appearance widely credited with inspiring millions of Chinese children to begin studying classical piano. Following this global moment, it is estimated that more than forty million children in China pursued piano education.

In October 2008, Lang Lang founded the Lang Lang International Music Foundation with the aim of expanding access to classical music, supporting young musicians through social outreach programs, and raising funds for humanitarian relief. The foundation provides free pianos and educational materials to schools, offers mentorship and performance opportunities to gifted young pianists, and organizes an annual music camp. That same year, he published his memoir Journey of a Thousand Miles.

Lang Lang’s repertoire spans a wide range of composers, from Baroque and Classical masters such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven to Romantic and modern figures including Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Sergei Prokofiev. Known for his powerful technique, energetic stage presence, and emotionally expressive interpretations, he has performed with leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and New York Philharmonic.

Beyond performance, Lang Lang is recognized for his efforts to bring classical music to broader audiences. His appearance at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony marked a pivotal moment for the global visibility of classical music. He has also expanded the genre’s boundaries through collaborations with artists from diverse musical backgrounds.

Committed to nurturing the next generation, Lang Lang continues to support music education and scholarship programs through the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous international awards and multiple Grammy nominations.

In June 2019, Lang Lang married German–South Korean classical pianist Gina Alice Redlinger at the Palace of Versailles in France. The couple welcomed their son, Winston, in October 2021. When not on concert tour, they divide their time between homes in New York and Beijing.

Today, Lang Lang continues his artistic life as both a virtuoso pianist and one of the most prominent global ambassadors of classical music.
