Kim Jong-un is the youngest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. Following the death of his father on December 17, 2011, he was appointed to the position of head of state of North Korea. His full name is Kim Jong-un. He was born on January 8, 1983, in Pyongyang, North Korea, as the youngest child of the family. His father was Kim Jong-il and his mother was Ko Yong-hui. He is the grandson of Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea.



Kim Jong-un has four older siblings: Kim Jong-nam, Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-chul, and Kim Sul-song. According to reports published in Japanese newspapers, he attended school in Switzerland near Bern. Early reports suggested that until 1993 he used the name “Chol-pak,” or until 1998 the name “Pak-kol,” while studying at an elite English-language international school in Gümligen, near Bern.

On December 30, 2011, while still officially the son of the head of state, Kim Jong-un was appointed Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army by the Political Bureau of the Workers’ Party of Korea. On July 18, 2012, he was promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Korean People’s Army.

After the death of his father Kim Jong-il on December 17, 2011, Kim Jong-un became the leader of North Korea at the age of 28. North Korea was founded in 1945 under the leadership of Kim Il-sung, who ruled the country until his death in 1994. He was succeeded by his son Kim Jong-il, and upon Kim Jong-il’s death in 2011, power was transferred to Kim Jong-un.

Kim Jong-un is also known internationally for a series of strict and unusual domestic policies, including bans on foreign cigarettes, mandatory uniform hairstyles for men, and prohibitions on listening to American-origin music.

Kim Jong-un married Ri Sol-ju in 2009. The couple has children, including a daughter named Kim Ju-ae, born in 2012. It has also been reported that another daughter was born in 2013.

On April 27, 2018, Kim Jong-un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Panmunjom Truce Village, located on the border between North and South Korea.

On June 12, 2018, Kim Jong-un met with U.S. President Donald Trump at a summit in Singapore to discuss North Korea’s nuclear program. A follow-up meeting held in Hanoi in February 2019 ended abruptly without an agreement.

On April 25, 2019, Kim Jong-un held his first summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Vladivostok, Russia.

On June 30, 2019, Kim Jong-un met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump at the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
