Cardi B was born on October 11, 1992, in Manhattan, New York City, United States. Her birth name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar. Her mother is from Trinidad, and her father is from the Dominican Republic. She has an older sister named Hennessy. She became famous under the stage name Cardi B. Because her family named her sister after the cognac brand “Hennessy,” they nicknamed her “Bacardi,” inspired by another cognac brand, which eventually evolved into the name Cardi B. She attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology, a vocational high school.



Before her music career, Cardi B worked as a cashier at the Amish Market in the TriBeCa area of New York City. After being fired, she began working as a stripper at the New York Dolls nightclub in 2011. She told her mother that she was working as a babysitter in order to pay bills. She started stripping at the age of 19 and saved the money she earned to invest in her music career and to produce her own mixtapes.

Cardi B gained attention through her outspoken and humorous social media posts. Her popularity increased significantly after joining the VH1 reality television show Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015. Cardi B married rapper Offset (born Kiari Kendrell Cephus) on September 20, 2017. The couple has a daughter named Kulture Kiari Cephus, born on July 10, 2018. She separated from Offset on December 5, 2018, reconciled on January 31, 2019, announced plans to divorce in September 2020, and later withdrew the divorce decision in October 2020.

In April 2018, Cardi B released her debut studio album Invasion of Privacy. The album included 12 tracks, and the song “I Like It” surpassed one billion streams on digital music platforms. The album was both a commercial and critical success.
