Underground (1995) – Film Summary
Underground is an epic, surreal, and darkly comic historical drama directed by Emir Kusturica. Spanning more than five decades, the film tells a sweeping allegorical story of Yugoslavia’s turbulent political and social history, beginning with the chaos of World War II and extending into the violent conflicts of the 1990s. Through an energetic blend of satire, tragedy, and absurd spectacle, the film explores themes of manipulation, nationalism, loyalty, and betrayal.
The story centers on two friends, Marko and Blacky, played by Miki Manojlovic and Lazar Ristovski. During the Nazi bombing of Belgrade in 1941, Marko shelters friends and family in an underground cellar while secretly exploiting the war for profit. Convincing those hiding below that the conflict still rages above ground, he keeps them manufacturing weapons for years, building power and wealth while they remain trapped in isolation.
As decades pass, the underground community continues to believe they are resisting an ongoing war, unaware that the world above has drastically changed. Meanwhile, Marko rises through the ranks of the Communist establishment, manipulating history and personal relationships to maintain his influence. Their intertwined lives are further complicated by their rivalry for the actress Natalija, played by Mirjana Jokovic.
Mixing carnivalesque imagery, explosive musical sequences, and tragic political commentary, Underground presents history as both farce and catastrophe. The film’s chaotic narrative structure and bold visual style transform the personal story of friendship and betrayal into a powerful metaphor for the fractured identity of a nation shaped by decades of war and ideology.
