The Big White (2006)
Official Trailer
Plot Summary
The Big White is a darkly comic crime tale set against the frozen isolation of Alaska, where desperation and absurdity collide in spectacular fashion. Paul Barnell (Robin Williams), a struggling travel agent buried under mounting debts, sees a glimmer of hope in the life insurance policy of his long-missing brother Raymond (Woody Harrelson). With his wife Margaret (Holly Hunter) battling Tourette syndrome and their financial future hanging by a thread, Paul becomes increasingly consumed by the idea of declaring his brother legally dead in order to collect the $1 million payout.
His plan hits a bureaucratic wall in the form of insurance investigator Ted Watters (Giovanni Ribisi), a sharp and ambitious claims officer who refuses to approve the request. Raymond has only been missing for five years—insufficient time to presume death. Ted, eager for a promotion that would allow him to leave Alaska with his girlfriend Tiffany (Allison Lohman) for a sunnier future, senses something suspicious about Paul’s urgency.
Fate intervenes when Paul accidentally discovers a frozen corpse behind his office. What begins as shock quickly morphs into a reckless opportunity. If he can pass the body off as Raymond’s, he can secure the insurance money and solve all his problems. Paul sets his desperate scheme into motion, staging the corpse in Alaska’s unforgiving wilderness. For a brief moment, everything appears to unfold according to plan.
However, chaos inevitably follows. When the mutilated body resurfaces and the insurance claim lands squarely on Ted’s desk, suspicion intensifies. Meanwhile, the real criminals behind the corpse—Gary and Jimbo (Tim Blake Nelson and Earl Brown)—begin searching for the missing evidence of their crime. Their pursuit leads them directly to Paul, and a dangerous negotiation ensues. Margaret becomes collateral in a high-stakes standoff as Paul scrambles to secure the money that was meant to save them.
Balancing bleak humor with mounting tension, The Big White transforms a seemingly simple fraud into a spiraling chain of deception, violence, and moral compromise. Beneath its icy landscape lies a sharply ironic exploration of greed, survival, and the unpredictable consequences of desperate choices.
