The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Set in 1881, at a time when the line between friend and enemy is dangerously blurred, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford centers on the final months of legendary outlaw Jesse James (Brad Pitt). At thirty-four years old, James is still orchestrating daring robberies while simultaneously waging a psychological war against those seeking to capture or kill him for reward money.

Paranoia and mistrust dominate Jesse James’s inner circle, as fear slowly replaces loyalty. Among his associates is the young and impressionable Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), a man who idolizes James yet quietly harbors ambitions of his own. As admiration turns into resentment, the balance of power shifts in subtle but devastating ways.

Adapted from Ron Hansen’s acclaimed novel, the film is not a conventional Western, but a haunting character study that examines fame, mythmaking, and betrayal. Rather than glorifying violence, it dissects the psychology of both the outlaw and the man destined to betray him.

Through its meditative pacing and melancholic tone, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford explores the cost of legend, questioning whether immortality through infamy is worth the price paid by those who live—and die—inside the myth.
