Plot Summary

Sunshine is set in the year 2057, when humanity faces extinction as the Sun gradually begins to die, threatening all life on Earth. With time running out, the planet’s final hope rests on a space mission aboard the spacecraft Icarus II, led by Captain Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada) and crewed by eight highly trained men and women.

Their mission is both ambitious and desperate: to deliver a massive nuclear payload into the Sun in an attempt to reignite it and restore its life-giving energy. As the spacecraft journeys deeper into space, the crew becomes increasingly isolated, eventually losing all radio contact with Earth.

Complications arise when the team detects mysterious signals from Icarus I, a previous mission sent seven years earlier with the same objective and long presumed lost. Faced with an unexpected decision, the crew must choose whether to stay on course or investigate the source of the transmission. A strange and devastating accident soon forces them into a brutal struggle for survival, where psychological pressure proves as dangerous as the physical threats of space.

As fear, sacrifice, and moral dilemmas intensify, the crew must confront an impossible question: how much can be risked for the future of humanity? Sunshine blends science fiction with philosophical tension, exploring faith, obsession, and survival at the edge of the unknown, where the fate of Earth hangs in the balance.
