Plot Summary

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) endures a lonely and frustrating summer with the Dursleys. Cut off from his closest friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger (Rupert Grint and Emma Watson), Harry is left in the dark about the wizarding world's response to his terrifying encounter with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). The only news he receives is a devastating notice: he is to be expelled from Hogwarts for performing underage magic in the presence of his Muggle cousin Dudley (Harry Melling). His act of magic, however, was a desperate attempt to defend himself against a sudden and unexplained Dementor attack.

Facing a disciplinary hearing orchestrated by the Ministry of Magic under Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy), Harry’s future hangs in the balance. Though he is ultimately cleared of charges—thanks largely to the intervention of Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon)—Harry returns to Hogwarts unsettled. Much of the wizarding community has been persuaded that his account of Voldemort’s return is a fabrication, casting doubt on his integrity and isolating him further.

Haunted by increasingly vivid nightmares that hint at darker forces gathering strength, Harry feels abandoned when Professor Dumbledore begins treating him with unexpected distance. Meanwhile, the Ministry tightens its grip on Hogwarts by appointing the calculating and manipulative Professor Dolores Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Her rigid, theory-based curriculum leaves students dangerously unprepared for the growing threat beyond the castle walls.

Refusing to remain powerless, Harry—encouraged by Hermione and Ron—secretly forms “Dumbledore’s Army,” a covert student group dedicated to practical defense training. As he teaches his fellow students how to protect themselves against the Dark Arts, Harry steps into a leadership role that will prepare them for the looming confrontation between light and darkness. In a world clouded by denial and political manipulation, courage and unity become the only weapons against the rising tide of evil.
