Plot Summary

Goodbye Bafana tells a powerful story of transformation—both of a man and of a nation—adapted from the memoirs of Nelson Mandela’s prison guard. Set in apartheid-era South Africa, where systemic racism defines daily life and a deep, state-enforced divide separates black and white citizens, the film follows James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes), an ordinary prison warder shaped by the prejudices of his environment.

James lives a modest life with his wife Gloria (Diane Kruger), firmly believing that black South Africans pose a threat to the country’s stability.
