Story Overview

Selma (Björk), a Czech immigrant living in United States with her young son Gene, leads a quiet yet emotionally intense life defined by sacrifice and endurance. Residing in a modest trailer, she works tirelessly to build a better future for her child while navigating the hardships of her new environment.

Employed at a factory producing stainless steel sinks, Selma struggles with a hereditary condition that is gradually stealing her eyesight. Aware that her son faces the same fate, she dedicates every ounce of her energy to saving enough money for an operation that could save Gene from blindness. In the midst of her harsh reality, Selma finds solace in vivid musical fantasies, where everyday sounds transform into elaborate song-and-dance sequences.

Her closest friend Kathy (Catherine Deneuve) offers emotional support and even joins her in an amateur musical production, helping Selma briefly escape her struggles. However, when her neighbor Bill (David Morse) discovers Selma’s secret savings, his desperate actions set off a devastating chain of events that will irreversibly alter her life.

Directed by Lars von Trier, Dancer in the Dark masterfully blends stark realism with imaginative musical elements, creating a haunting and deeply moving cinematic experience. The film explores themes of sacrifice, justice, and unconditional love, delivering a powerful narrative that lingers long after the final scene.
