Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Plot Summary
Bridget Jones’s Diary is a charming and sharply observed romantic comedy adapted from the bestselling novel by Helen Fielding. Set in contemporary London, the film follows Bridget Jones, a single woman in her early thirties who decides to take control of her chaotic personal life by keeping a brutally honest diary. Through this diary, Bridget documents her struggles with career anxiety, body image, family pressure, and, most of all, her turbulent love life.
Bridget finds herself caught between two very different men: the charismatic yet unreliable Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) and the reserved, principled barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). As Bridget navigates workplace flirtations, disastrous dinner parties, and her own insecurities, she gradually begins to understand what she truly wants from love and from herself.
Before its release, the casting of American actress Renée Zellweger as a quintessentially British heroine sparked widespread debate. However, her performance—particularly her convincing British accent and heartfelt comedic timing—was met with strong critical and audience acclaim, ultimately becoming one of the film’s defining strengths.
Blending self-deprecating humor with genuine emotional warmth, Bridget Jones’s Diary emerged as a defining romantic comedy of the early 2000s and a modern classic of the genre. Its success later led to the sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, released in 2004.
