Story Overview

A Scanner Darkly is set in a bleak near-future America, in the decaying suburbs where social collapse, paranoia, and addiction define everyday life. The story centers on a group of individuals slowly being destroyed by Substance D, a powerful and devastating narcotic that erodes identity, memory, and human connection.

At the heart of the narrative is undercover narcotics agent Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves), whose assignment requires him to spy on his own circle of friends—people who are themselves victims of the drug epidemic.
