Story Overview

Sun-woo (Byung-hun LEE) is not just an ordinary hotel manager; he is a meticulous, disciplined enforcer and the trusted right-hand man of a powerful underworld boss, Mr. Kang (Young-chul KIM). Known for his efficiency and unwavering loyalty, Sun-woo operates with cold precision in a world governed by violence and hierarchy.

However, Mr. Kang harbors a deep insecurity—his young girlfriend Hee-soo (Min-a SHIN). Suspecting her of infidelity, Kang assigns Sun-woo a simple yet ruthless task: follow her and deal with the situation if his suspicions prove true. When Sun-woo discovers Hee-soo with another man, he faces an unexpected internal conflict. For reasons even he cannot fully comprehend, he chooses mercy over duty and lets them live.

This single act of defiance shatters the rigid code he has lived by. Enraged by betrayal, Kang orders Sun-woo’s execution. Brutally hunted down, beaten, and buried alive, Sun-woo miraculously survives. What follows is a relentless descent into vengeance, as he rises from the grave to confront the very organization he once served with absolute loyalty.

Blending stylized violence with emotional depth, A Bittersweet Life explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and existential identity within the brutal framework of organized crime. The film stands out for its atmospheric direction, philosophical undertones, and a powerful performance by Byung-hun LEE.
