Age: 46
Profession: Head of State
Place of Birth: Doha, Qatar
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is the Emir of the State of Qatar. He assumed power on 25 June 2013 following the abdication of his father.
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was born on 3 June 1980 in Doha, the capital of Qatar, as the second son of Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, then Emir of Qatar, and Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. He received his early education in the United Kingdom, graduating from Harrow School, and later from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1998.
After completing his military education, Tamim bin Hamad began his service in the Qatari Armed Forces in 1998, holding the rank of lieutenant. His early exposure to military and strategic affairs played a significant role in shaping his leadership profile.
On 25 June 2013, following the voluntary abdication of his father Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani became the Emir of Qatar, marking the first peaceful transfer of power in the country’s modern history.
Under his leadership, Qatar has continued its policy of strategic global investment and active diplomacy. With a population of approximately 2.1 million, Qatar ranks among the wealthiest nations in the world, with per capita income exceeding 100,000 US dollars. Beyond its oil and natural gas wealth, Qatar has established major international investments, including significant stakes in Volkswagen, Hochtief, Siemens, and Deutsche Bank.
The foundations of Qatar’s outward-looking foreign policy were laid during the reign of his father. During the Arab Spring, Qatar supported the Muslim Brotherhood and extended substantial financial assistance to Egypt following the election of Mohamed Morsi as president, a policy that generated concern both within the Arab world and in Western capitals.
Qatar also hosts the largest United States air base in the region, underscoring its strategic military importance.
Founded in Doha on 1 November 1996 by his father, the television network Al Jazeera operates under the ownership of the Qatari ruling establishment and has become one of the most influential media organizations in the Arab world.
Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is a member of the International Olympic Committee. In 2006, he was named “Best Sports Personality in the Arab World” by the Egyptian newspaper Al Ahram. He played an active role in securing Qatar’s hosting of the 2014 International Swimming Championships in Doha and the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Regionally, Tamim bin Hamad has acted as a mediator in numerous conflicts, including disputes involving Lebanon, Yemen, Darfur, and the Palestinian issue. He also authorized the establishment of a Taliban political office in Doha as part of efforts to facilitate dialogue and improve relations with Kabul.
In 2015, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visited Turkey and held talks with Recep Tayyip Erdogan. During a visit to Istanbul on 12 March 2015, he purchased the historic Erbilgin Mansion for approximately 100 million euros after it was admired by his second wife.
