Rachel Meghan Markle was born on 4 August 1981 in Los Angeles, California, United States. She is the daughter of Thomas Markle, a cinematographer, and Doria Ragland, an African American social worker and therapist. Meghan Markle grew up in the View Park–Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. She attended a private elementary school in Hollywood and began campaigning for gender equality at an early age. In 2003, she graduated from Northwestern University near Chicago with a degree in theater and international relations.



Meghan Markle completed an internship at the United States Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, gaining early exposure to international relations. In 2008, she appeared in the science fiction television series Fringe alongside Joshua Jackson, portraying FBI Special Agent Amy Jessup. Her acting career continued with numerous roles in television series and films, gradually establishing her presence in the entertainment industry.

On 16 August 2011, Meghan Markle married film producer Trevor Engelson. The marriage ended in divorce on 7 March 2014. In the summer of 2016, she met Henry Mountbatten-Windsor, and the couple became engaged in November 2017.

On 19 May 2018, Meghan Markle married Henry Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger son of Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, England. Following their marriage, Henry Mountbatten-Windsor received the title Duke of Sussex, while Meghan Markle became Duchess of Sussex. On 6 May 2019, the couple welcomed their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

On 9 January 2020, Meghan Markle and her husband Henry Mountbatten-Windsor announced their decision to step back from senior roles within the British royal family, marking a major shift in their public and professional lives.
