Early Life and Family Background

Chloe Kim was born on April 23, 2000, in Long Beach, California, and raised in Torrance. She has two older sisters, Erica and Tracy. Her parents, Boran Yoon Kim and Jong Jin Kim, immigrated from South Korea to the United States. When her father first arrived, he reportedly had only $800 and worked minimum-wage jobs before earning a degree in manufacturing engineering technology from El Camino College. He later left his job to fully support Chloe’s snowboard career.

Kim began snowboarding at age four on a $25 board purchased on eBay. At six, she joined the Mountain High team and began competing. She spent part of her childhood training in Geneva, Switzerland, while attending school there, before returning to California to train at Mammoth Mountain. She speaks English, French, and Korean fluently. In 2013, she was named to the U.S. Snowboard Team.

In 2024, she became the first woman to land a 1260 in competition.
