Story Overview

The Science of Sleep follows the fragile inner world of Stéphane Miroux (Gael García Bernal), a shy and imaginative young man who returns to France after his father’s death. Struggling to adapt to an unfulfilling office job and a monotonous routine, Stéphane escapes reality through vivid dreams that blend handmade visuals, stop-motion fantasy, and surreal logic. In these dream sequences, his subconscious becomes a playground where fears, desires, and memories merge into whimsical yet unsettling imagery.

Stéphane’s life begins to change when he meets his charming neighbor Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg). The two bond over their shared creativity, building playful craft projects and inventing small imaginary worlds together. For Stéphane, however, the line between dreams and reality gradually becomes blurred, and his romantic feelings become entangled with the dreamlike narratives that constantly invade his waking life.

As his imagination spirals further out of control, Stéphane struggles to distinguish genuine emotional connection from the illusions created by his own mind. Directed by Michel Gondry, the film explores the delicate border between fantasy and reality while portraying the vulnerability of a man whose creativity both enriches and complicates his ability to love and communicate.
