Story Overview

Set against the harrowing backdrop of World War II, The Railway Man tells the powerful true story of Eric Lomax, a British officer captured by the Japanese army and forced to work on the Thai–Burma railway—later infamously known as the Death Railway. Constructed to strengthen Japan’s wartime communications, the railway was built at an immense human cost, with prisoners enduring starvation, exhaustion, and brutal treatment.

Held in a prisoner-of-war camp in Thailand, Eric refuses to work on the railway and is subjected to severe torture until he is coerced into submission by a young Japanese soldier, Takashi Nagase. Though Eric survives the war and attempts to rebuild his life, the trauma he endured never truly fades.

Decades later, when Eric learns that Nagase is still alive, the memories he has long tried to bury resurface with devastating force. What begins as a journey driven by vengeance gradually transforms into a profound confrontation with memory, guilt, and the possibility of forgiveness—challenging Eric to face not only his former captor, but also the deepest scars of his own past.
