Thank You For Smoking (2005)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Thank You for Smoking is a sharp, satirical look at modern lobbying culture, centered on Nick Taylor (Aaron Eckhart), a smooth-talking and charismatic spokesman for a powerful tobacco company. Nick is fully aware that the product he defends is harmful—even deadly—yet he passionately believes in protecting America’s right to smoke, turning moral ambiguity into a professional art form.

As Nick’s reputation grows, he finds himself under intense pressure from both public opinion and political power. His most formidable opponent is a determined U.S. senator (William H. Macy) who is committed to eliminating cigarettes from society altogether. Faced with televised hearings, media ambushes, and ethical dilemmas, Nick relies on his extraordinary talent for reframing the truth, bending logic without technically lying.

Beyond its biting humor, the film explores the personal cost of persuasion. Nick’s relationship with his 12-year-old son forces him to confront the consequences of his work, questioning whether rhetorical brilliance can substitute for genuine integrity. Smart, provocative, and unapologetically cynical, Thank You for Smoking stands as a clever critique of spin, power, and the seductive nature of persuasion in contemporary America.
