Plot Summary

Romulus, My Father is a deeply moving drama based on the memoir of Raimond Gaita, portraying the emotional struggles of a European immigrant family trying to build a new life in rural Australia after the devastation of war.

The story centers on Romulus (Eric Bana), a principled and hardworking immigrant who settles in the harsh countryside with his young son Raimond (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Determined to raise his child with honesty and moral strength, Romulus works tirelessly to provide stability despite the isolation and hardships of their new environment.

The fragile balance of their lives begins to unravel as Romulus’s wife Christina (Franka Potente) struggles with emotional instability and dissatisfaction with their difficult circumstances. Her turbulent decisions and inner conflicts place immense pressure on the family, leaving young Raimond to witness the painful realities of adult relationships far too early.

Through these trials, Romulus’s loyal friend Hora (Marton Csokas) becomes an important figure in the boy’s life, offering support and guidance during moments of crisis. As Raimond grows up amid tragedy, resilience, and love, he learns powerful lessons about integrity, responsibility, and the enduring bond between father and son.

With its quiet storytelling and powerful performances, Romulus, My Father explores themes of migration, loyalty, mental illness, and moral courage, presenting an intimate portrait of family endurance and the shaping of a young boy’s identity.
