Lonely Hearts (2006)

Official Trailer

Plot Summary

Set in the late 1940s, Lonely Hearts is inspired by the chilling true story of the infamous “Lonely Hearts Killers,” whose crimes shocked America. Martha Beck (Salma Hayek) and Raymond Fernandez (Jared Leto) form a deadly partnership built on obsession, manipulation, and murder.

Their method is deceptively simple. Raymond places personal ads in newspapers, targeting lonely widows searching for companionship. Presenting himself as a charming Latin lover, Ray gains their trust and affection with ease. Once the women are emotionally and financially ensnared, Martha enters the picture, posing as Ray’s sister.

What begins as a con quickly escalates into a brutal killing spree. As Ray seduces the victims, the couple robs them of their savings and ultimately their lives. The intense bond between Martha and Ray transforms their relationship into a fusion of passionate love and effortless profit, blurring any remaining moral boundaries.

When the pair are finally captured, they confess to 12 murders, though investigators believe the true number is closer to 20. Convicted and sentenced to death on August 22 1949, their appeals fail. On March 8 1951, Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez are executed side by side in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison, bringing a grim end to one of America’s most disturbing criminal love stories.
