Story Overview

Leatherheads is a lively sports comedy set in the roaring 1920s, when professional American football struggled to survive in a rapidly changing sports landscape. After their struggling team loses its financial backer, charismatic player-coach Dodge Connolly (George Clooney) faces the possibility that the game he loves could disappear entirely.

Determined to revive both his team and public interest in the sport, Dodge convinces college football sensation and celebrated war hero Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) to join the roster. Carter’s arrival instantly draws massive attention: he is fast on the field, charming off it, and widely praised as a national hero. With Carter on the team, Dodge hopes professional football will finally gain legitimacy and popularity.

However, ambitious Chicago journalist Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger) is not convinced that Carter’s heroic reputation tells the whole story. As she investigates his wartime past, she begins to suspect that parts of his legend may have been exaggerated or misunderstood. While Lexie pursues the truth, tension grows between Dodge and Carter, both on the field and off, as competition for glory and Lexie’s attention intensifies.

Blending fast-paced sports action with romantic rivalry and sharp humor, Leatherheads offers a nostalgic look at the early days of professional football, when the sport was still finding its identity and larger-than-life personalities shaped its future.
