Story Overview

Le Deuxième Souffle is set in 1958, following the legendary gangster Gu, portrayed by Daniel Auteuil, who has just escaped from prison. With the entire French police force relentlessly pursuing him, Gu becomes a symbol of resistance within a collapsing criminal underworld governed by strict codes of honor.

Before leaving the country with the woman he loves, Manouche (Monica Bellucci), Gu plans one final job to secure the money necessary for their escape. The heist succeeds flawlessly, but a calculated manipulation by the police causes Gu’s own accomplices to suspect him of betrayal, turning allies into enemies.

Branded a traitor and stripped of trust, Gu finds himself isolated in a world where reputation is everything. Determined to clear his name, he embarks on a ruthless path to restore his honor, even if it means confronting both former partners and the authorities closing in around him.

A modern reinterpretation of a classic crime narrative, Le Deuxième Souffle explores loyalty, integrity, and moral absolutism within the rigid codes of old-school gangster culture. Through its restrained intensity and fatalistic tone, the film examines what it means to live—and die—by honor in a world where betrayal is inevitable.
