Story Overview

Girl, Interrupted follows Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder), a young woman who is rushed to the emergency room and later discusses the incident with her psychiatrist. Susanna experiences disturbing visions and leads a reckless personal life, including an inappropriate relationship with her father’s closest friend. While she insists that swallowing a bottle of aspirin with vodka was merely an attempt to forget her problems, her doctor firmly identifies the act as a suicide attempt.

Against her will, Susanna is advised to spend some time at Claymoore, which she soon discovers is not a rest facility but a psychiatric hospital for young women. There, she is confronted with patients whose struggles reflect different forms of emotional and psychological trauma.

Among them is Georgina (Clea DuVall), a compulsive and provocative liar; Polly (Elisabeth Moss), deeply traumatized and terrified by fire due to past burns; and Daisy (Brittany Murphy), who isolates herself and refuses to eat in front of others. Towering over them all is Lisa (Angelina Jolie), a volatile and manipulative patient whose charisma and defiance give her immense influence over the ward.

As Susanna forms bonds with these women, her sense of identity and sanity is repeatedly challenged. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Toby (Jared Leto) grows increasingly disturbed by the intensity of Susanna’s new environment and the people she is drawn to.

Balancing psychological drama with intimate character study, Girl, Interrupted explores the fragile line between mental illness and individuality, questioning who truly defines what it means to be “normal” in a society eager to label and confine.
