Plot Summary

Set in the dazzling yet ruthless world of 1920s Chicago, Chicago unfolds against a backdrop where fame, scandal, and spectacle intertwine. When celebrated vaudeville star Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) murders her husband and sister after discovering their affair, her crime propels her into the public eye as much as onto death row.

Soon after, aspiring performer Roxie (Renée Zellweger) commits her own crime, killing her lover Fred (Dominic West) when he admits he can no longer help her achieve stardom. Thrust into the same prison cell as her idol Velma, Roxie sees incarceration not as an end, but as an opportunity.

Their fortunes shift dramatically under the guidance of slick, media-savvy lawyer Billy (Richard Gere), who treats the courtroom like a stage and the press like his orchestra. Through manipulation, sensational headlines, and carefully crafted illusions, Roxie transforms herself into a celebrity, eclipsing Velma in the process.

As jealousy intensifies and competition sharpens, the arrival of another notorious inmate, Kitty (Lucy Liu), further ignites the media frenzy. In a city where justice bends to spectacle and truth is secondary to applause, Roxie prepares her final and most daring act—one designed to secure her place under the spotlight, no matter the cost.
