Saul Alvarez, born as Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, is a Mexican professional boxer widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters of his generation. He was born on July 18, 1990, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Raised on his family’s farm, Álvarez learned horseback riding at a young age—a passion he continues to pursue. He is the youngest of eight children, with six brothers and one sister.

Due to his naturally red hair, Saul Alvarez was given the nickname “Canelo,” a Spanish word meaning cinnamon. Several of his brothers also pursued boxing careers, most notably Rigoberto Alvarez, Ramon Alvarez, and Ricardo Alvarez. Canelo began boxing at the age of 13. In 2003, he won a silver medal at the Mexican Junior Championships, followed by a gold medal the following year. He completed his amateur career with an impressive record of 44 wins and only 2 losses.

Saul Alvarez turned professional at just 15 years old. Fighting primarily in Mexico during the early years of his career, he compiled a record of 35 wins and 1 draw in 36 bouts by 2011. On March 5, 2011, he fought for the vacant WBC Super Welterweight title and won by unanimous decision after 12 rounds, becoming a world champion at the age of 21.

On November 22, 2015, Álvarez defeated Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto to capture the WBC Middleweight Championship. At the age of 23, he faced boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a high-profile bout. By 2017, Álvarez had competed in 50 professional fights, with his only career loss occurring on September 14, 2013, against Mayweather.

On September 16, 2017, Saul Alvarez faced undefeated Kazakh champion Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas for the WBC, WBA, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles. After 12 fiercely contested rounds, the fight ended in a split draw, allowing Golovkin to retain his belts. The rematch took place in 2018, where Álvarez secured a decisive victory, cementing his status as the dominant middleweight of his era.

Holding the WBA and WBC Middleweight Championships, Saul Alvarez signed a historic broadcasting deal with the UK-based streaming platform DAZN on October 18, 2018. The five-year agreement covered 11 fights and was valued at an unprecedented $365 million.

Following the DAZN deal, Álvarez returned to the ring on December 15, 2018, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he defeated British boxer Rocky Fielding to win the WBA Super Middleweight Championship.

Personal Life
