Sarah Jessica Parker, born in 1965, is an American actress whose career spans television series, Hollywood productions, and theater. She achieved worldwide fame with her portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw in the television series Sex and the City, a role that brought her international recognition and earned her both Golden Globe and Emmy Awards.
Sarah Jessica Parker was born on March 25, 1965, in Ohio, United States. She was born into a Jewish family. Her father, Stephen Parker, was a businessman. Her mother, Barbara Parker, divorced Stephen Parker when Sarah Jessica Parker was still a child and later married Paul Forste, a truck driver. Parker grew up with her mother, stepfather, and seven siblings. During her childhood, she received ballet and vocal training and spent her free time visiting art galleries and attending ballet performances.
Her first acting experience came in a Broadway production titled The Innocents. After moving to New York with her family, Parker decided to fully commit herself to an acting career. She attended a performing arts school before high school and, before completing her education at Dwight Morrow High School, appeared with four of her siblings in the Broadway musical The Sound of Music. Between 1977 and 1981, she continued her Broadway journey by performing in the musical Annie. Although she initially had a minor role, she began playing the lead role from 1979 onward.
In 1982, Parker appeared in the sitcom Square Pegs. Although the series lasted only one season, her performance was widely praised. That same year, she also appeared in the television film My Body, My Child. Over the following two years, she acted in three feature films, the most notable being Footloose (1984). Her other films during this period included Firstborn (1984) and Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985). After 1985, she focused primarily on television productions, including A Year in the Life (1986), The Room Upstairs (1987), and Dadah Is Death (1988).
From 1990 onward, Parker’s career gained significant momentum. She appeared in L.A. Story (1991), starred alongside Nicolas Cage in Honeymoon in Vegas, acted in the 1993 fantasy film Hocus Pocus, and appeared with Johnny Depp in Ed Wood. In the mid-1990s, she featured in Miami Rhapsody (1995) and, in 1996, appeared in Mars Attacks!, directed by Tim Burton, as well as If Lucy Fell and The First Wives Club.
In 1997, Parker received an offer from producer Darren Star for what would become the most significant project of her career, Sex and the City. Initially hesitant about committing to a long-running series, she eventually accepted the role. The series achieved enormous success from its first season onward. From the third season, Parker also served as a producer on the show. After five consecutive nominations, she won the Emmy Award for her performance in 2004.
Following the conclusion of the series in 2004, rumors emerged about a film adaptation, which Parker initially declined. In 2005, she returned to theatrical cinema with The Family Stone, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy. Her next film was Failure to Launch (2006), in which she starred alongside Matthew Mcconaughey.
Beyond her acting career, Parker became widely recognized as a fashion and style icon. This status led to collaborations with globally renowned brands. In 2003, she became the face of Nutrisse hair products, followed by a campaign for GAP in 2004. In 2005, she launched her own perfume brand titled Lovely.
While filming Footloose in 1984, Parker met actor Robert Downey Jr., with whom she shared a relationship until 1991. During this period, Downey struggled with substance abuse. In the early 1990s, Parker was also romantically linked to journalist John F. Kennedy Jr. and singer-songwriter Joshua Kadison. In 1997, she married actor Matthew Broderick, whom she met through her brother Timothy Britten Parker. Their first child, James Broderick, was born on October 28, 2002.
Parker is a member of the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee and serves as a representative for UNICEF. At the MTV Movie Awards in 2000, she famously changed outfits 15 times during the ceremony. Her favorite shoe brand in Sex and the City, Manolo Blahnik, even designed a shoe in her honor. Her closest friend is actor Ron Rifkin. She currently lives in New York with her husband and child. Standing at 1.63 meters tall, Parker continues her work as a producer, including the independent film Spinning Into Butter, in which she also appears. One of her later projects is the musical comedy Slammer, released in 2007.
