Charles III, formerly known as Prince Charles while he was heir to the British throne, was born on November 14, 1948, at Buckingham Palace in London, England. His full name is Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten. He is the son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Upon the death of his mother on September 8, 2022, he ascended the throne and became King of the United Kingdom, taking the regnal name Charles III.

Charles III began his education at Hill House School in west London. In 1966, he spent two terms at Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop campus in Victoria, Australia. In 1967, he enrolled at the University of Cambridge, where he studied anthropology, archaeology, and history. After two years, he spent a term at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, studying Welsh history and language. He graduated from Cambridge in 1970.

In 1976, Charles III founded the Prince’s Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting young people. Following royal tradition, he served in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. During his youth, his personal life attracted significant media attention, particularly his relationships, as the Royal Family sought a suitable bride who met traditional religious and aristocratic expectations.

These expectations were met by Lady Diana Spencer, and their marriage was strongly supported by both the Spencer family and the Royal Family. The wedding took place on July 29, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral and was broadcast worldwide to an audience of approximately one billion viewers. Following the ceremony, Diana became Princess of Wales and was expected to one day become Queen.

Charles III and Diana Spencer separated on December 9, 1992, and were formally divorced on August 28, 1996. The couple had two sons: Prince William, Prince of Wales (born June 21, 1982) and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex (Henry Mountbatten-Windsor, born September 15, 1984). Diana Spencer tragically died in a car accident on August 31, 1997, following a paparazzi chase in Paris, after having met Dodi Al-Fayed.

On April 9, 2005, Charles III married Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he had known since they first met at a polo match in 1970. Their marriage marked the union of a long-standing relationship.

Upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, Charles III ascended the throne, becoming the oldest monarch to do so in British history. Clarence House confirmed that his regnal name would be Charles III. In his first address as King on September 9, 2022, he formally declared his elder son, Prince William, as Prince of Wales.
