Dmitri Medvedev, born Dmitri Anatolyevich Medvedev, was born on September 14, 1965, in Leningrad to an academic family. His father was a professor of physics, while his mother was a professor of Russian literature. He studied law at Saint Petersburg State University Faculty of Law and graduated in 1987. He completed his postgraduate studies in 1990, earning the title of Doctor of Legal Sciences.
Between 1990 and 1999, Dmitri Medvedev served as a faculty member at the Saint Petersburg Faculty of Law. From 1991 to 1996, he also worked as a legal adviser to the Foreign Relations Committee of the Saint Petersburg Mayor’s Office. During this period, he became one of the closest associates of Vladimir Putin. On February 15, 2000, Medvedev was appointed head of Putin’s election headquarters, and following Putin’s election victory, he assumed a role at the Kremlin on June 3, 2000.
In 2000, Dmitri Medvedev was appointed chairman of Gazprom, Russia’s largest company and the world’s leading natural gas producer. His political career continued to advance rapidly under Putin’s leadership. In October 2002, he became the President’s representative on the National Banking Council, and on October 30, 2003, he was appointed head of the Kremlin administration. In April 2004, he was also named a member of the Russian Security Council.
On November 14, 2005, Dmitri Medvedev was appointed First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia by Vladimir Putin. Two years later, on December 10, 2007, he was officially announced as the presidential candidate. On March 2, 2008, he was elected President of the Russian Federation with approximately 70 percent of the vote. He served as president until 2012.
Following the completion of his presidential term, Dmitri Medvedev was elected Prime Minister of Russia on May 8, 2012. He remained in this position until January 15, 2020, when he resigned from office.
On January 16, 2020, Vladimir Putin appointed Mikhail Mishustin as Prime Minister of Russia, while Dmitri Medvedev was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.
Dmitri Medvedev is married to Svetlana Medvedeva, whom he met during middle school. They married in 1983, several years after graduating from high school. The couple has one son, Ilya Medvedev, born in 1995.
Dmitri Medvedev is known for his personal interests outside politics. He is a devoted fan of hard rock music and frequently listens to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. He maintains a strict fitness routine, swimming approximately 1,500 meters twice daily and practicing jogging, chess, and yoga.
Among his hobbies are reading the works of Mikhail Bulgakov and closely following his hometown football club, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg. He keeps an aquarium in his office and personally cares for the fish. He also owns a cat named Dorofi.
Dmitri Medvedev has reported an annual income of approximately $80,000 and has stated that he donates 10 percent of his monthly salary to charitable organizations. His wife reportedly has no personal income or bank savings. The family resides in a luxury apartment in Moscow.
