Charles Michel was born on December 21, 1975, in Belgium. His full name is Charles Yves Jean Ghislaine Michel. His father, Louis Michel, was also a prominent political figure. Charles Michel began his political career at the age of sixteen by joining the Jeunes Réformateurs Libéraux de Jodoigne. At the time, his father had been serving as Mayor of Jodoigne since 1983.



In 1994, at the age of eighteen, Charles Michel was elected as a member of the Provincial Council of Walloon Brabant. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and later continued his studies at the University of Amsterdam. In 1998, he began practicing law in Brussels.

Since 1999, Charles Michel has been elected to the Federal Chamber of Representatives. In 2000, he became Minister of the Interior of the Walloon Government, earning the distinction of being the youngest minister in Belgian history at the age of twenty-five. In 2006, he was elected mayor of his city.

In December 2007, Charles Michel was appointed Minister of Development Cooperation in the third government of Guy Verhofstadt. In January 2011, he was elected President of the Mouvement Réformateur and subsequently resigned from his ministerial post.

On October 11, 2014, Charles Michel became Prime Minister of Belgium.

In December 2018, amid growing public discontent fueled by the Yellow Vests protests spreading from France to Belgium, nationwide demonstrations were organized by socialist (ABVV), Christian (ACV), and liberal (ACLVB) trade unions. As a result of these developments, Charles Michel lost a confidence vote on December 17, 2018, and announced his resignation. Belgian King Philippe of Belgium initially decided to suspend the acceptance of his resignation.

King Philippe later accepted the resignation and requested that Charles Michel remain at the head of a caretaker minority government until the next elections scheduled for May 2019.

Charles Michel is married to Amélie Derbaudrenghien.

On July 2, 2019, Charles Michel was elected President of the European Council, one of the most important leadership positions within the European Union. He served as President of the European Council from 2019 to 2024.
