Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was born on November 19, 1954, in Cairo, Egypt. He comes from a religious family, like many Egyptians. His father, Hussein Khalil el-Sisi, known as Hasan, owned shops in the Gamaliya district of Cairo and was fond of listening to the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi graduated from the Egyptian Military Academy in 1977 and began his military career the same year as a lieutenant in a mechanized infantry battalion. In 1987, he became a staff officer after completing his studies at the Egyptian Command and Staff College. He continued his military education abroad, graduating from the British Command and Staff College in 1992.
After serving as commander of an Independent Mechanized Brigade and later the 23rd Mechanized Division, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was appointed Military Attaché to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2003, he completed the Combat Course at Nasser Military Academy and finished a postgraduate scholarship at the War College. In 2006, he graduated from the United States Army War College.
In 2008, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was appointed commander of Egypt’s Northern Military Region, based in Alexandria, and subsequently became Director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance.
Due to his long service within the intelligence community, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi developed close familiarity with many members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Following the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, he held consultation meetings with leaders of various Islamist parties and groups in Egypt.
On August 12, 2012, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi appointed Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as Minister of Defense and Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces. On January 27, 2014, he was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.
On July 1, 2013, the Egyptian military issued an ultimatum giving President Mohamed Morsi 48 hours to resolve the country’s political crisis. On July 3, 2013, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi led a military coup that overthrew the government. Following the takeover, numerous members of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested on charges of inciting violence and disturbing public order.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi resigned from the military on March 26, 2014. Later that year, he stepped down from his positions as head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense, formally announcing his candidacy for the presidency.
In the presidential elections held on May 26, 27, and 28, 2014, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi won approximately 95 percent of the vote and was elected President of Egypt. In the elections that concluded on March 28, 2018, following three days of voting, he was re-elected with about 92 percent of the vote.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi married Entissar Amer in 1977. The couple has four children: Mustafa el-Sisi, Mahmoud el-Sisi, Hassan el-Sisi, and Aya el-Sisi.
