Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001), known professionally as Aaliyah, was an American R&B singer, dancer, actress, and model. She became a prominent recording artist during the 1990s through songs including "Back & Forth," "If Your Girl Only Knew," "Are You That Somebody?," "Try Again," "More Than a Woman," and "Rock the Boat." Her recordings combined contemporary R&B with hip-hop production, particularly through her collaborations with Timbaland and Missy Elliott. She also starred in the films Romeo Must Die (2000) and Queen of the Damned (2002). On August 25, 2001, she died at age 22 in an airplane crash in the Bahamas, shortly after completing the music video for "Rock the Boat."
Early Life and Family Background
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York City, United States. Her parents were Diane Haughton and Michael Haughton, and she had an older brother, Rashad Haughton. When she was five years old, her family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she spent much of her childhood.
Her interest in singing and performing developed at an early age with encouragement from her mother. She took vocal lessons and participated in school plays, church choir performances, and other musical activities. Her family supported her participation in auditions and performances while she continued her education.
At approximately ten years old, Aaliyah Dana Haughton competed on the television talent competition Star Search. Although she did not win, she continued pursuing music. At age eleven, she performed in Las Vegas with Gladys Knight, the singer who had been married to her uncle, music executive Barry Hankerson. The engagement gave her experience performing before a professional audience.
She attended Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, where she studied drama while maintaining her recording career. Despite her professional commitments, she completed her education and graduated in 1997.
Career Beginnings and Debut Album
Aaliyah Dana Haughton entered the recording industry through the assistance of her uncle Barry Hankerson, who founded Blackground Records. She secured a recording agreement at a young age and began working with singer, songwriter, and producer R. Kelly, who became the principal creative contributor to her debut album.
Her first studio album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, was released in May 1994 through Jive Records and Blackground Records. Most of its songs were written and produced by R. Kelly. The album introduced her to a national audience and established her recording career while she was still a teenager.
The debut single, "Back & Forth," reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot R&B Singles chart. Her recording of "At Your Best (You Are Love)," originally recorded by The Isley Brothers, also became a hit. Other songs from the album included "Down with the Clique" and the title track, "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number."
The album eventually received platinum certification in the United States. Following its release, Aaliyah Dana Haughton continued performing and recording, but her subsequent projects were developed with different producers and songwriters.
One in a Million and Collaborations with Timbaland and Missy Elliott
In 1996, Aaliyah Dana Haughton released her second studio album, One in a Million. The project brought together producers and songwriters including Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Jermaine Dupri, and Rodney Jerkins. Her work with Timbaland and Elliott introduced a different production approach, combining layered rhythms, electronic percussion, hip-hop influences, and restrained vocal arrangements.
The album included "If Your Girl Only Knew," "One in a Million," "4 Page Letter," "The One I Gave My Heart To," and "Hot Like Fire." Several tracks were written or produced by Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who continued collaborating with her on later recordings.
"If Your Girl Only Knew" reached number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. The title track, "One in a Million," became another of her signature recordings. The album achieved multi-platinum certification in the United States and expanded her audience beyond the success of her first release.
During this period, Aaliyah Dana Haughton also worked with director Hype Williams and choreographer Fatima Robinson on music videos that combined dance performances with fashion and visual storytelling. Her video appearances frequently featured coordinated choreography and distinctive styling.
Soundtrack Recordings and Grammy Nominations
In 1997, Aaliyah Dana Haughton recorded "Journey to the Past" for the animated film Anastasia. The song was written by composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song at the 70th Academy Awards in 1998, with the nomination credited to its songwriters. Aaliyah performed the song during the televised ceremony.
In 1998, she released "Are You That Somebody?" for the soundtrack of the comedy film Dr. Dolittle, starring Eddie Murphy. Produced by Timbaland, the recording incorporated an unconventional rhythmic arrangement and a recurring sample of a baby's laughter. The single received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1999 ceremony.
The song also received extensive radio and music television exposure. Its accompanying video, directed by Mark Gerard, featured choreography by Fatima Robinson and performances by Aaliyah and her dancers.
Film Debut and Romeo Must Die
Aaliyah Dana Haughton made her feature-film debut in the 2000 action film Romeo Must Die, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. She starred opposite Jet Li as Trish O'Day, the daughter of a businessman whose family becomes involved in a conflict between criminal organizations. The cast also included Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, and DMX.
The production required Aaliyah Dana Haughton to train for action scenes and work with martial arts performers. She also participated in the film's soundtrack as an executive producer and recording artist.
Her song "Try Again," produced by Timbaland for the Romeo Must Die soundtrack, became her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also the first song to reach the top of that chart based solely on radio airplay, without a commercially available physical single in the United States at the time.
"Try Again" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Its music video won Best Female Video and Best Video from a Film at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Queen of the Damned and Planned Film Projects
Following Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah Dana Haughton was cast as Akasha, an ancient vampire queen, in Queen of the Damned, an adaptation of the vampire fiction of Anne Rice. Directed by Michael Rymer, the film also starred Stuart Townsend, Vincent Perez, and Lena Olin.
She completed her scenes before her death in August 2001. Queen of the Damned was released in February 2002, approximately six months after the airplane crash. Her performance as Akasha became her second and final completed feature-film role.
Aaliyah Dana Haughton had also been cast as Zee in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski. She had filmed material for the productions before her death. The role was subsequently recast with Nona Gaye, and Aaliyah's footage was not included in the completed films.
Other film projects under consideration included Honey and Sparkle. She had been associated with a proposed production of Sparkle involving Whitney Houston, but the project was not completed during her lifetime.
Final Studio Album: Aaliyah
On July 17, 2001, Aaliyah Dana Haughton released her self-titled third studio album, Aaliyah, through Blackground Records and Virgin Records. The album arrived approximately five weeks before her death and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
The recording sessions involved several producers and songwriters, including Timbaland, Static Major, Bud'da, and J. Dub. The album continued her use of electronic instrumentation, unusual rhythmic patterns, and layered vocal production.
Its songs included "We Need a Resolution," "More Than a Woman," "Rock the Boat," "I Care 4 U," "Never No More," and "I Refuse." "We Need a Resolution," featuring Timbaland, was released as the album's lead single. "More Than a Woman" and "Rock the Boat" were subsequently promoted as singles.
Following Aaliyah Dana Haughton's death, sales of the album increased, and it rose to number one on the Billboard 200. It became her only studio album to reach the top position on that chart. "More Than a Woman" later reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 2003, while "Rock the Boat" received a posthumous Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Marriage to R. Kelly and Subsequent Legal Proceedings
The relationship between Aaliyah Dana Haughton and R. Kelly became the subject of public controversy following the release of her debut album. On August 31, 1994, Aaliyah, then 15 years old, and Kelly, then 27, were married in a ceremony in Illinois. Their marriage certificate falsely recorded Aaliyah's age as 18.
The marriage was subsequently annulled because Aaliyah was underage. For years, the circumstances surrounding the ceremony remained a subject of reporting and public discussion, while Kelly avoided publicly confirming details of the relationship.
During later federal criminal proceedings against R. Kelly, prosecutors presented evidence concerning the marriage and the procurement of fraudulent identification documents. In 2021, former Kelly associate Demetrius Smith testified that he had bribed a government employee to obtain false identification for Aaliyah before the ceremony.
The evidence was also examined in subsequent federal appellate proceedings. Court records described how the fraudulent documents were used to obtain a marriage license while concealing Aaliyah's actual age. These proceedings provided additional documentation of the circumstances surrounding the 1994 marriage.
Death in the Bahamas Plane Crash
In August 2001, Aaliyah Dana Haughton traveled to the Bahamas to film the music video for "Rock the Boat," a song from her recently released third album. After the filming was completed, she and members of the production team prepared to return to Florida on August 25, 2001.
The group boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B aircraft at Marsh Harbour Airport on Great Abaco Island. Shortly after takeoff, the airplane crashed near the airport. All nine people aboard, including Aaliyah Dana Haughton, seven other passengers, and pilot Luis Morales III, died as a result of the accident. Aaliyah was 22 years old.
Investigators found that the aircraft had been substantially overloaded and that its weight distribution exceeded permitted balance limits. The preliminary investigation identified no evidence of a mechanical malfunction that explained the crash. The excessive weight and improper loading became central findings in the examination of the accident.
Further investigations also raised serious questions about the qualifications and conduct of pilot Luis Morales III. Toxicology results revealed evidence of cocaine and alcohol in his system. Reports concerning his employment and flight qualifications identified additional irregularities. The available findings do not establish that pressure from Aaliyah's team to carry excess equipment was the sole cause of the accident.
A funeral service for Aaliyah Dana Haughton was held in New York City on August 31, 2001. She was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, New York.
Posthumous Music Releases
Following her death, previously released recordings and additional material from Aaliyah Dana Haughton's recording sessions continued to be distributed. In December 2002, Blackground Records released I Care 4 U, a compilation featuring several established hits alongside previously unreleased songs.
The compilation included "Miss You," which was released as a posthumous single. Its accompanying music video featured appearances by artists and associates including Missy Elliott, Timbaland, DMX, and Queen Latifah.
In 2005, Ultimate Aaliyah was released as a compilation of recordings from different periods of her career. Her recordings remained available through various physical and digital releases, although the availability of much of her catalog on streaming services was limited for several years because of licensing and distribution arrangements.
