Plot Summary

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a fantasy adventure about the Grace family, whose lives change forever when they encounter mysterious creatures from an unseen world. Some of these beings are enchanting, others terrifying, but all of them challenge the family to confront not only supernatural dangers but also the emotional tensions within their own household.

After their parents’ separation, Jared Grace, his twin brother Simon, their sister Mallory, and their mother Helen move from New York to a crumbling old mansion that once belonged to their great-great uncle Arthur Spiderwick and their great aunt Lucinda. Almost immediately, strange occurrences begin to plague the house. Unseen creatures seem to inhabit the estate, and inexplicable accidents start to unfold. The eerie events suggest that the mansion hides secrets far beyond ordinary explanation.

Determined to uncover the truth, the three siblings begin investigating the Spiderwick estate and its mysterious past. Their search leads them to the extraordinary legacy left behind by Arthur Spiderwick. As they dig deeper, they realize the mansion stands at the center of a hidden world inhabited by magical and dangerous beings.

The adventure truly begins when Jared discovers Arthur Spiderwick’s long-hidden field guide, a handwritten volume titled “Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You.” In this book, Arthur documented the secret lives of fairies and magical creatures living alongside humans. Written with curiosity and good intentions, the guide contains knowledge that could prove extremely dangerous if it falls into the wrong hands. By uncovering the book after decades of concealment, Jared unwittingly opens a gateway to forces that have been waiting for exactly such an opportunity.

Directed by Mark Waters, the film adapts the bestselling book series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. The screenplay was written by Karey Kirkpatrick and Martin Short. The film stars Freddie Highmore in dual roles as Jared and Simon Grace, alongside Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Joan Plowright, and David Strathairn. Several magical creatures are voiced by Seth Rogen and Martin Short.
