Story Overview

Rain Man tells the story of Charlie Babbitt, a selfish and emotionally distant young hustler portrayed by Tom Cruise, who is shocked by an unexpected inheritance following the death of his estranged father. Expecting to receive his father’s fortune along with a cherished 1949 Buick, Charlie instead discovers that the bulk of the inheritance has been left to a brother he never knew existed. This revelation upends his plans and exposes unresolved wounds tied to his family’s past.

Charlie soon learns that his brother Raymond, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, is an autistic savant living in a specialized care facility. Driven by greed and frustration, Charlie kidnaps Raymond in an attempt to gain access to the inheritance. What begins as a calculated act of manipulation gradually turns into a life-changing journey. As the two brothers travel together, Charlie’s hardened outlook begins to soften, and his understanding of responsibility, empathy, and genuine human connection is profoundly transformed.
